Scholarships and Awards

The Science Preprofessional Studies Department has several Scholarships and Awards disbursed yearly. Below are the Department's Scholarships and Awards and the Awardees chosen. 

Emil T. Hofman Scholarship for Rising Sophomores

This scholarship is given to rising Sophomores in honor of the late Dr. Hofman. Dr. Hofman was a dedicated and renowned professor of general chemistry and Dean of the Freshman Year of Studies for many years before his retirement. His concern for undergraduate students led him to set up the Hofman Scholarship. Dr. Hofman wanted to financially assist promising students, particularly students pursuing careers in the healthcare field. He taught thousands of practicing physicians in the United States and received his support and encouragement over the years.

The Jim Dinardo Memorial Science Award

Established in 1992, this endowment supports the Science Preprofessional Studies Major. This award is presented to the science preprofessional student who attained the highest academic record in the Department at the end of their Sophomore year.

Emil T. Hofman | William V. Mollihan Award

Established in 2013, this endowment provides an annual award for pre-medical students or Notre Dame alumni who plan to attend Indiana University Medical School in South Bend, Indiana.

Daniel and Anne Crossen Preprofessional Student Award

Established in 2015, this award will be given to a student(s) entering their senior year with a 3.9 or higher GPA who intends to apply to a medical school.

Dr. Lawrence Baldinger Award (Center for Health Sciences Advising Award)

This award is given each year to a student who demonstrates academic excellence, responsible leadership, exemplary behaviors, and professional awareness of the healing arts.

Patrick John Niland Memorial Award

Established in 1992, this endowment supports an annual Science Preprofessional Studies studentwiths high academic achievement, professionalism, and integrity.

Dr. Samuel J. Chmell, M.D. Award

Established in 1995, this endowment provides an annual award to an outstanding student, a preprofessional studies major, who best exemplifies the highest academic achievement and uncompromising integrity in honor of Dr. Samuell J. Chmell.

Rev. Joseph L. Walter, C.S.C Award

This award is given each year to a student who demonstrates academic excellence, responsible leadership, exemplary character, and service within and beyond the Notre Dame community.
